And 5 That Sucked...
5. Max Dillon/Electro The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Sorry guys, but it's just not the best. That's not to say Foxx's turn as Electro is compulsively awful he isn't, and when he's given license to chew the scenery he can be incredibly entertaining. Unfortunately, that only really happens halfway through the third act, and up until that point, Foxx is utterly let down by the script. If there was ever a performance to show that great stars need great scripts, this was it without anything of true dramatic weight to sink his teeth into, the actor ends up floundering and playing second fiddle to Dane DeHaan's more interesting yet still rushed Green Goblin arc. All excellent villains need a compelling motivation, and unfortunately Electro's is pretty one-dimensional. An obsessive Spider-Man worshipper, Dillon just wants to be noticed but is ignored by everyone and generally trampled on by his work. It's not the most original of motivations, but it's a dance that can be danced well. Yet what drives him to hate Spider-Man can be called pretty much incomprehensible he's annoyed because Webhead forgot his name and caused the TV cameras to be momentarily drawn away from him during their confrontation at Times Square. As vendettas go, it's pretty weak sauce, and not even Foxx's considerable abilities can drag such a poorly thought-out character from the mud.
