Jeff Bridges: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Tom Friend - Masked And Anonymous

Did you know that, not so long ago, legendary musician and mumbler Bob Dylan wrote the screenplay to a film? With the guy who did Borat? Of course you didn't. And do you know why you were previously unaware of this bizarre, landmark filmmaking collaboration? Because the final product was irredeemably naff. Masked And Anonymous was co-written by Dylan and Larry Charles, a comedy veteran who wrote for Seinfeld before working with Sacha Baron Cohen on Borat, Bruno and The Dictator, and we wish that it came close to being even half as entertaining as any of those films. Even Bruno. And that's not a particularly high bar to reach. Still, Masked And Anonymous fails in totality, despite the best efforts of its cast and crew. Dylan made the ill-advised decision to appear in an acting appearance, too, his lack of chops highlighted by an ensemble that also included the likes of John Goodman, Penélope Cruz, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Lange and Bruce Dern. Oh, and Jeff Bridges as Tom Friend, an aggressive reporter interviewing Dylan's revolutionary ex-con Jack Fate who's in the process of putting on a benefit concert in a repressive, dystopian future. Bridges has to say lines like "Everybody's doing the killing now. Everybody's doing the dying." Despite his best efforts, even The Dude can't make nonsense like that sound profound.
