1. Seth Brundle - The Fly (1986)

There's a very good chance you don't really like The Fly - but that's sort of the point. It's a provocative in a way that only David Cronenberg could be, it punches well below the belt and it doesn't really invite repeat viewing apart from to particularly strange minds.

But it is a fantastically well made film, anchored by a brilliant, perfectly cast performance by Jeff Goldblum. As Seth Brundle, he's exactly the right blend of eccentric, aloof, otherworldly and creepy: there's something about his lithe physicality that suggests something haunting even before his awful transformation.

It is because of his performance, and his chemistry with Geena Davis that the real horror of the film plays out so well. It's not all just about the finger nails falling out, or the gruesomeness or the vomiting, it's watching a relationship fall apart without any way to cease its slide.
