John Madden pays Vaughn's DEBT
Busy pondering over the comic book properties Thor and Kick-Ass (the latter actually now favourite to be filmed first), writer/director Matthew Vaughn has declared himself too busy to direct a remake of the 2007 Israeli thriller The Debt which he co-adapted with his Stardust scribe Jayne Goldman (wife of one Jonathan Ross). Instead it will be John Madden behind the camera, a fellow Brit who was Academy Award nominated for Shakespeare in Love nearly ten years ago but more recently has found life a little more troubling with the box office flop Proof and the action movie Killshot, which although filmed in 2005 with some big name stars, it has still yet to see the light of day either in theatres or on DVD.
The Debt revolves around three Mossad agents who, 20 years after World War IIs end, learn that a Nazi war criminal is still alive and set out to pursue him across Europe. Assaf Bernstein directed the 2007 Israeli film, titled HaHov, which like the remake is set in the 1960s and 1990s.
