Johnny Depp: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Jack Sparrow - Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Though Depp was already well-known as a Hollywood heartthrob and talented actor in quirky dramas, it really is his 2003 appearance in Pirates of the Caribbrean that propelled him to ridiculous levels of fame (and even more ridiculously-sized paycheques).

Depp not only won the hearts of a new generation of fans worldwide, but he also scooped a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work as the drunk, roguish, mascara-clad pirate who ends up being a lot more likeable and memorable than the rather bland Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

So strong is Depp's presence that he has pretty much single-handedly steered the film into a multi-billion dollar franchise, with the fifth entry preparing to go into production within the next few months. Though the character has pretty much worn out his charm by now, he is still the most entertaining aspect of these increasingly-awful films, though it would be nice if Depp would stop taking these evident paycheque roles (exorbitantly profitable though they surely are).
