12. The Blue Boy

Joker Blue Boy
Warner Bros.

You need a real eye to catch this one - either by turning up the saturation on the trailer, or watching the movie on an IMAX screen.

When Arthur is dancing with his mother Penny, in the background a painting is faintly visible, which just so happens to be Thomas Gainsborough's 1770 work "The Blue Boy."

You can probably see where we're going with this - given Arthur's agonising struggles with mental health, it's not a leap at all to suggest that he, in fact, is the blue (as in miserable) boy himself.
