There are numerous references to movies released in 1981 throughout the film, and on a cinema marquee which includes Brian De Palma's classic Blow Out, there's the rather peculiar inclusion of the little-seen swashbuckling comedy Zorro the Gay Blade.

It's odd, at least, until you remember that Zorro has a very specific place within Batman lore, given that it is traditionally the movie The Mark of Zorro that young Bruce Wayne was watching with his parents on the fateful day they were gunned down.

Better still, Zorro is often seen as an influence on Bruce when conceiving of the Batman persona.
