The painting shows a jester battling a pack of lions, which is an incredibly tight, apt metaphor for the movie itself.

Whether you consider the lions society - especially the careless rich - or a metaphorical representation of mental illness, Arthur is most certainly the jester in this scenario, desperately scrapping to survive.
