Joker Trailer 2 Review: 9 Ups & 3 Downs

3. There's Not A Great Deal Of Todd Phillips Here

Todd Phillips
Legendary Pictures

It's a slightly minor concern, but in seeking to make a movie dedicated to the work of Martin Scorsese - hell, they sought him as a producer and the film was initially announced with his name co-opted into the marketing (at least by an over-eager community, anyway) - there's no space for Todd Phillips yet.

There's nothing in any of the footage we've seen or any of the approach to the material that we've been told about that suggests he's been chosen as a director for anything other than his ability to ape Scorsese. It's not a bad skill to have, but for now, it would be a shame if there isn't both that and Phillips own creative statements in there.

Yes, that feeling might chance when the film comes out in full, but judging on this trailer alone, he's a little absent.
