Joker Trailer 2 Review: 9 Ups & 3 Downs

8. ...But No Batman

Joker Thomas Wayne
Warner Bros.

How hugely brave of Warner Bros and Phillips not to go with one of the easiest selling points this movie could have cynically used to broaden out its audience base even further.

In not mentioning or even really hinting at Batman in the slightest, they've not only avoided accusations of pandering and a cheap trick to inflate ticket prices (because, let's be clear, they could have stuck on bookends to this movie showing a modern day Joker telling his "secret" past to Batman for the sake of that), but they also give the real story - and the more interesting one - room to shine in its absence.

Everyone wants to see Batman more. Everyone wants to see Joaquin Phoenix's Joker opposite Batman in some way too. But there's a lot to be said about the restraint shown in not doing it here or even falsely using Batman's presence to sell this movie.
