Josh Brolin: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
3. Brandon Walsh - The Goonies (1985)
It's hard to find a film as beloved as The Goonies. It combines friendship, adventure and clear goals into a heart-warming narrative about a group of mismatched kids trying to save their town by following a treasure map left by cinema's second most famous pirate One Eyed Willy. When the Astoria Country Club seeks to expand over the 'Goon Docks' area, the residents are resigned to losing their homes, until The Goonies set out on a weekend of entertainment to celebrate their expiring time in their homes. Their initial plans are let down when older brother Brandon (Brolin) fails his driving test and leaves them without the ability to 'cruise the coast in style' on their last weekend there. Dejected, they begin to search in the attic for something to do, and discover the first clue that leads them on a whirlwind of adventure. Brolin is great in his debut role as the older brother of Sean Astin's Mikey Walsh - he clearly cares about the boys enough to track them down and help them escape violent criminals, and his frustration at the antics of his brother, and his difficulty in balancing that with more typical teenage concerns like girls and street cred, make him a completely convincing character. He even gets a satisfying romantic arc within the narrative, and you can't help but root for the earnest performance that Brolin gives. For a big screen debut - like the majority of the cast in fact, Brolin's performance is particularly impressive, and a great foundation for his career beyond.
