Joss Whedon: 10 Crowning Moments Of Awesome

5. The Cabin in the Woods - The Japanese Girls

It's barely a couple of scenes, but one of the standout highlights in Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's stunning horror epic 'The Cabin in the Woods' where we global attempts to appease ancient gods in order to keep the world turning. One of these attempts is to unleash a monstrous spirit upon a group of innocent Japanese schoolgirls in a classroom in Tokyo in a manner that both honours and parodies movies such as 'The Ring', 'Ringu', 'One Missed Call' and 'Shutter' wherein the ghosts of murdered girls seek vengeance. Whedon and Goddard turn this scenario on its head rather hilariously when the girls not only survive, but trap the spirit inside that of a frog, performing a Shinto ritual to cure the spirit of its evil and saving the day. In any other movie, it'd be a surreal but grin-inducing and uplifting twist ending to a horror film; here, however, it earns a very different and darkly hilarious response from the overseeing technicians.
