Jumanji: The Next Level Review - 6 Ups & 4 Downs

6. Jack Black Steals The Show (Again)

Jumanji The Next Level Jack Black
Sony Pictures Releasing

Jack Black received considerable acclaim for his performance in the previous film, brilliantly nailing the mannerisms of a vapid teenage girl encased within the body of a portly middle-aged man.

And by way of the film's shifted body swap mechanic - its only especially imaginative idea - this time Black spends a large chunk of the movie impersonating Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain) instead.

Needless to say, portraying a black teenager without descending into offensive stereotype is a challenge, but Black once again nails it superbly, and as anyone who's seen the trailer will know, this isn't the only chameleonic feat of impersonation Jack gets to play around with during the movie.

He's spot-on regardless of who he's approximating, and even if the laughs don't come as hard this time around, Black is once again the killer ingredient, enough that even someone as statuesque as The Rock fades into the periphery of many scenes.
