Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Review - 7 Ups & 4 Downs
2. There's No Setup For A Sequel
When a movie that's clearly this expensive is released, it's a given that it's going to provide some sort of easy tie-in or dangling thread for the inevitable sequel should it indeed be successful.
Jumanji, however, is a rare film of its kind that's weirdly self-contained, to the point that everything is basically neatly tied up. Even when it seems like it's about to nod to the continued existence of the game, this is quickly crushed with an hilariously self-aware closing gag.
Though it would certainly be possible for another movie to exist within this world, the story of these kids and their friendship feels totally tied off, and so the prospect of any sort of direct sequel doesn't feel particularly likely.
At a time where every blockbuster film not directed by Christopher Nolan seemingly needs to set up a sequel or nod towards a cinematic universe, isn't that refreshing?
