Yes! The island gets destroyed! It may be hard for fans of the movie to think of the original Jurassic Park island being blown to pieces at the end of the original story, given how important it is for the franchise and sequels, but it really happens!

The original Jurassic Park film ends with everyone escaping and the island being left alone. It's likely that this was done to enable later movies to return there, and we saw just that in 2015 with the release of Jurassic World. The new park was built on the same island, and even the T-Rex from the 1993 original was among the exhibits, having been left to live out its life after the first movie's events.

But in writing the book, of course, Crichton had no interest in coming back to the island, so he wrote a different ending. As the characters are whisked away in a chopper by the local militia, the call is made for the island to be bombed.

Dr. Grant and Ellie watch as the entire island, as well as its reptilian inhabitants, explode in fiery colour and are destroyed, and Isla Nublar becomes nothing but a landscape of ash and flames.

It might be shocking for fans of the film to hear that all the dinosaurs were killed in the book, but never fear, there are few twists yet to come...
