Later in the film, Dieter wandered off on his own during a momentary period of group rest to relieve himself, informing only Carter - who hadn't heard him - before needlessly going deep into the woods. Surprised by a compy and inevitably disoriented, Dieter couldn't find his way back to the group, stumbling down to the base of a ravine where he was set upon by a group of compies. Though he was able to shake them off, Dieter was forced to continue wandering down the stream with the relentless compies in tow until his energy ran low, giving the pack the opportunity to show that they were anything but afraid of him.
