Jurassic World Super Bowl Trailer Roars In

One of the few spots held back to premiere on the night is this new, 1-minute plus trailer for Jurassic World. It focuses heavily on the Indominus Rex, the new, gene-spliced dinosaur at the heart of the story. Or at least bits of the Indominus Ex, one at a time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mvWuky1g0g The thinking is age-old. "Don't show all of the monster at once. Tease the audience. Give them glimpses." Night of the Deamons' Jacques Tourneur was a master of this... until he wasn't. It's an excellent strategy when it's well executed but when your lead character is looking straight into the dinosaur's eyes and you decide to simply not give us a POV shot because you don't want a close up for the dinosaur, you're fudging things a little. I'm not saying the film itself will cheat this way, and director Colin Trevorrow may have found the most ingenious ways to introduce his new beast bit by bit. And it certainly makes sense for a trailer to be a little coy. Too many trailers spoil too much. If I'm concerned about this film at all, it's not because of the Indominus Rex. "Chris Pratt: Raptor Whisperer" might prove tricky to keep plausible, especially when the set-pieces get ramped up, and I still have a hard time believing that a fully functioning dinosaur park could open so soon after the events of the first film. They're going to have to sell this to me with some pretty compelling explanations, I think. Still, Trevorrow's first film, Safety Not Guaranteed was more than good enough to make me interested in his take on the Jurassic series.
