Just How Big Is The Star Wars Galaxy?

5. Planets

Since the Star Wars galaxy is so large, there are a plethora of planets that exist in the different regions, with the cosmos containing well over 3 billion habitable planets.

The worlds themselves are as diverse as the creatures that inhabit them. Some planets, like Coruscant and Taris, are complete megalopolises, both of which having a variety of species that called the planets their homes. Coruscant had a population of about 3 trillion during the era of the Galactic Empire, with humans making up the bulk of population, whilst Taris had a comparatively small population of 6 billion during its Sith occupation around 4,000 years before the events of A New Hope. Other planets, like Hoth, possess no sentient life, and remains a desolate, uninhabitable place.

Although most of the planets held a significant population, a world's importance was dictated by its position in the galaxy. The closer a planet was to the core, the more political influence it usually held, since these worlds were hubs of trade, culture and technology. Planets like Alderaan, which is located in the Core Worlds region, held great influence in the Republic, both new and old, whilst worlds in the Outer Rim Territories, like Geonosis, were largely ignored by the Galactic Senate.

Worlds such as Geonosis would become supporters of the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) movement, in which the CIS planets aimed to gain independence from the Core Worlds' jurisdiction, by forcing a Republic surrender during the Clone Wars, through the overwhelming numbers of their Separatist Droid Army.
