Kevin Costner: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
5 Performances That Sucked
5. Wyatt Earp - Wyatt Earp
Wyatt Earp is a film that I desperately wanted to enjoy. It had all the pieces of a great western - the cast, the story of a historical figure, the director; yet, in the end, it just fails to come together. The timing of the film is so flawed, I often found myself listing off what had just happened so that I could get my bearings. And Kevin Costner doesnt much help the cause.
With the exception of Hatfields and McCoys, Costner was never too great at playing a legendary leader. His best characters from movies are flawed creations, which, eventually start to realize their potential, and by the end, have won over the audience. With his portrayal of Wyatt Earp, though, I never felt this. Wyatt comes off as so brutally unlikable that I found it hard to root for him. All that I saw behind the role was a mean Kevin Costner, dressed up in old western clothes.
Dennis Quaid was also in this film, in the role of Doc Holliday. With his hoarse, heavy southern accent and dirty demeanor, Quaid immediately stole the show. Even though his morals were questionable, I wanted him to win. Costner, in comparison, made me feel almost nothing. I cant say that it was a complete disaster, but it just wasnt anything special. And, if you are playing the historical figure Wyatt Earp, you have to do better than that.
