Zack And Miri Make A Porno was "supposed to be the one that punched us through to the next level. Everyone thought it would do $60 to $70 million, and it wound up doing Kevin Smith business". Considering these are the words of Smith himself, it's no surprise to reveal that this movie was a disappointment, commercially and critically. The film made $42.1 million in it's theatrical run, and was burgeoning star Seth Rogen's worst box-office opening in his career up to that point. It co-starred Elizabeth Banks and with a fun premise (lifetime platonic friends and roommates decide to make a pornographic movie to lift themselves out of financial difficulty) it seemed primed to hit big with the same demographic who loved Judd Apatow's comedies (which deliver equal amounts of lewd humour and heartfelt pathos). Unfortunately, it just wasn't funny enough to resonate fully with audiences. It's a decent Friday night watch, an undemanding diversion that will pass a few hours reasonably well, but it isn't something that will live long in the memory. Oh well.
