Kevin Smith to make his $50 million answer to STAR WARS?

One criticism of Kevin Smith has been his lack of ambition. Whether you like the guy or not, you can't deny he has done an amazing job at building himself up as having one of the most loyal fanbases in the industry right now and they have wanted to see him make a summer epic for quite some time, instead of continuing his low profile comedies with similar characters/situations. He came close with SUPERMAN. He came close with GREEN HORNET. Now, is the time right for one of the most vocal STAR WARS fans in the world... to make a huge $50 million budget space comedy? Of course as if we doubted it, The Hollywood Reporter say the film will reference the history of the sci-fi genre on film... most probably the works of George Lucas. "I am your father" may also make an appearance, as the movie will revolve around a father-son relationship, just like Lucas' epic did. Smith is of course producing with his good friend Scott Mosier via their View Askew banner and The Weinsteins will no doubt get first option. Although Smith's script has been turned into them, the movie won't film until after Smith has done RED STATE... his terrorism horror which yet to has a studio but Smith hopes will helm in the Spring. Smith's ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO released in a few weeks is budgeted at $25 million and is his highest budget film so far. His space comedy would be double that amount. Smith also states this movie won't be RANGER DANGER. I commend Smith here, his next two projects sound extremely risky and a huge step up from him. Let's see what he can do without the stabilizers and for me, CLERKS II felt like it was the end to that universe. I was surprised he did ZACK AND MIRI post-that, I thought these kind of projects would have been his destination then.
