9. Leonardo DiCaprio Gives Arguably The Best Performance Of His Career
Shocking nobody, Leonardo DiCaprio gives a terrific performance here in his sixth collaboration with Scorsese, playing a character quite unlike any he's portrayed before.
DiCaprio's Ernest Burkhart is a far cry from the many charming and charismatic men he's played throughout the decades, instead quickly outlined as a rather pathetic putz who, in the quest for an easy, enriched life, hangs on every last word of his devilishly conniving rancher uncle, William King Hale (Robert De Niro).
And it's a part DiCaprio absolutely knocks out of the park, aided by a script which lends tremendous dimension to Burkhart.
For though it's easy to laugh at how spineless the man is, there's also huge complexity to his relationship with his Native American wife Mollie (Lily Gladstone), who he does appear to harbour a genuine love for despite the mounting crimes he becomes involved with against the Osage people.
DiCaprio will certainly receive a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his work here, and if it's not his finest performance to date it's certainly damn close.
