King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

1. It Doesn't Take Itself Too Seriously

The first trailer for this film painted it as a mostly self-serious revision of King Arthur's history, but then the second trailer came out and implied a much more light-hearted picture.

As such, it's easy to go into the movie not knowing what to expect from a tonal perspective, but thankfully, Ritchie mostly keeps things light and fun.

Yes, there is rampant murder and sure darkness at times, but it's thoroughly heightened and absurd from the get-go thanks to the wildly fantastical tone, which includes gigantic, ancient animals and Jude Law making a Devil's bargain with an octopus-like beast.

Even when things occasionally get truly brutal, the abundance of comic banter between Arthur and his teammates helps keep things on an even keel, and there thankfully aren't any instances of mood whiplash throughout.
