4. The Possibility Of A Cinematic Monster Universe
Blockbuster filmmaking has changed a lot since its humble beginnings in the 70s. Thanks in large part to Marvels critical and commercial success in telling stories over multiple films, every studio is trying to catch up and create their own cinematic universes. With all this in mind, it doesnt take a genius to see why the King Kong property has changed hands from Universal to WB. WB and Legendary own the rights to the Godzilla brand, and through a simple change in studio, the two will be able to share screen time together. While this in itself is reason to jump for joy, the ramifications for this change of hands go beyond that. Should this set up be successful, we could be looking at a fully-fledged cinematic kaiju universe. Here is what is known so far. The success and enthusiasm for Godzilla 2014 has convinced Toho to allow WB and Legendary the rights to use King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra in any sequels, one of which is guaranteed. King Kong will debut in his own stand alone film, Kong: Skull Island, which, fingers crossed, will lead to King Kong vs. Godzilla. This is a pretty decent line up of classic characters to use, all of which will be able to interact on a blockbuster scale. Plus, there is bound to be at least some new original monsters to round out the roster. That is super exciting! Honestly, no one, especially fans of the genre, ever expected this development. Will King Ghidorah or Mothra fight Kong as well? Will they all team up to defeat King Ghidorah? Or will some other unknown force emerge? There are so many possibilities, but one thing has been made clear
