Lakeshore game for the THUNDERCADE

From the self confessed geek who wrote FANBOYS comes a video game rivalry that encompasses the lives of three friends and a young punk who has beaten their long held high score!

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, Lakeshore Entertainment have just acquired the video-game themed spec Thundercade. The spec comes from Ernie Cline - a self proclaimed video game nut who owns six consoles and got the idea for the film when his son started beating him on the Xbox. Who was this new generation who didn't grow up with Atari? And how cool would it be to have old school 80's gamers against the modern game players of today. Plot details from Variety...
Story centers on a videogame junkie who faces a midlife crisis when he discovers a young punk has beaten the world record he has held since his teens. Determined to reclaim his place in gaming history, he and two friends escape their 9-to-5 lives for a shot to win Thundercade, the world's ultimate gaming championship.
Cline is also the guy who scripted the love letter to Star Wars titled Fanboys which has been the subject of much fanboy aganst across sites like AICN and /Film who weren't impressed with the way the Weinsteins have cut the film for it's release later this year. Starring Sam Huntington, Chris Marquette, Dan Fogler, Jay Baruchel, and Kristen Bell as a group of friends who anxiously await the premiere of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (we've all been there!), they decide they can't take it any more and break into the Lucas Ranch to steal an early print of the film. One of the friends suffers from cancer and he desperately wants to see the film before he dies... along their journey they encounter obsessed trekkies, bikers and even William Shatner!

In the studio's cut, the cancer plot is to be removed and replaced with a tone that is more of a parody of George Lucas and Star Wars even though the likes of Lucas and Kevin Smith have seen the original cut and loved it - even going so far as offering help for the film. Fanboys is currently in some kind of limbo and it's not known when or how it will be released. Thundercade looks to touch upon the same themes of popular culture that stays with you forever and fanboy nostalgia for the good old days. Lakeshore will fast track the film once a director is found - which is awesome.
