The Last Of Us Movie: 9 Crucial Things They Need To Get Right

7. The World

One of the key differences between active player agency within a given game world and that of passively taking one in through film, is the ability to literally interact with each and every piece of the scenery whenever the player sees fit in the former. Many Last of Us players remember the various scenes set in the suburbs, where we were all aware moving forward down the street was the logical path, yet many of the surrounding buildings could be entered with many a story to tell inside. Obviously in the transition there's no way they're going to be able to focus entirely on the likes of fan-favourite Ish; a character born from a series of notes left behind in the game's sewer level. However they either need to trim the likes of these extraneous details away so as to focus on Joel and Ellie entirely, or have the likes of Ish be mentioned between the two for the sake of representing the wider narrative of multiple survivors. With the drastically reduced runtime for the movie, establishing that key element of desolate humanity left behind only in notes and items will be very hard to pull off in a distinguishing manner on-film, and chances are the tone and explorative elements will instead resemble something more of John Hillcoat's The Road.
