Leonardo DiCaprio Interested In Stan Lee Film Biopic?

Something all True Believers can get behind!

According to a report in AIPT, Leonardo DiCaprio has expressed interest in playing Marvel icon Stan Lee in a big screen biopic.

Speaking at Hasbro's HASCON event, 94-year-old Stan Lee himself was asked by a member of the audience who he'd like to play him on film - if a biopic were ever to be made - and he certainly sounds enthused by the idea of the Academy Award winning actor being his cinematic surrogate.

"Believe it or not, I’ve already discussed it with Leonardo DiCaprio... He’s a neighbor of mine and we were talking one day some months ago, and he said, ‘Boy it’d be fun to do your story on the screen.' So I said, ‘Well, I’ll audition you.’ Gotta make sure the guy can do it.”

The idea that Stan hangs around with Leo on his weekends is a brilliant concept in and of itself (and one equally deserving of its own TV series), but a move to chronicle Lee's journey on the big screen deserves special attention - certainly so, if any feature borrows heavily from the writer's semi-autobiographical Amazing Fantastic Incredible, published in 2015.

One would hope that such a project would encourage other studios to get to work on biopics for other industry greats too - like Jack Kirby and Joe Simon - but even then, a feature that depicted Marvel's formative years would be even better. So many talented individuals contributed to the House of Ideas in its heyday, and they all deserve to be the centre of attention in some form or another.

As for Leo? Well, he's got a bit of a dilemma. If he's as big a Marvel nut as Lee claims ("he has all the walls covered with big Marvel posters and everything"), then he may find all this speculation linking him to the Joker Origin movie a tad tiring. Not that anyone can't love both Marvel and DC, but still, a Stan Lee biopic sounds infinitely more entertaining than whatever the heck WB are cooking at the mo'.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
