Les Misérables: 10 Reasons It's Awesome

1. Battle Scenes

There was a point in Les Misérables, at least for me, where the love triangle storyline really just felt tiresome and drawn-out, but Hooper manages to redeem things by soon enough getting to the riveting battle scenes of the 1832 June Rebellion, saving the day just as things seem like they're going to get really trite. Though these battle scenes are pretty gore-free due to the 12A/PG-13 ratings, this does little to diminish the impact and impressive production quality of them; the giant cannons, the up-close sword-fights, the mass of bodies, and the strong performances from even the smaller characters all combine to make this an immaculate reconstruction of both the real-life event and the stage show's attempt. This is the one scene that above all else can be delivered better than the musical equivalent, because, of course, of the sheer scale and real physicality that it's difficult or impossible to replicate on a small stage with a restricted space. Those worried that Hooper can only do dialogue-driven fare should relax on the strength of this; the guy is a sure-fire all-rounder alright. Les Misérables is, if you don't care for musicals like me, a pretty good flick. If you're a fan, though, this is bound to be an awesome, exhilarating experience. What are your expectations for it ahead of release? Let us know in the comments below. Les Misérables is released in UK cinemas January 11th, 2013.
