Life Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

2. It's Highly Tense & Atmospheric

Life Hiroyuki Sanada
Columbia Pictures

All of these positives wouldn't add up to much collectively if the movie's mood and atmosphere felt off, but thankfully, this is a sharply-calibrated sci-fi horror that makes the most of its slow-burn opening and dread-filled remainder.

It's incredibly easy to get wrapped up in the quest to stop Calvin, especially as he seems so terrifyingly unstoppable, and he mutates and changes size so frequently.

Simply, Espinosa's direction combines with strong performances, excellent production design and one creepy-a** creature to leave the audience wondering quite how they can possibly take Calvin down.

Sure, it hasn't got the almost restrained art-house feel of Alien, but it nevertheless makes the viewer feel like they're trapped on-board with the crew. Don't be surprised if you've got sweaty palms by the end.
