Locke: 10 Reasons It's The Most Awesome Boring Film You'll Ever See

2. It's Realistic

Locke is just an ordinary man with a pretty ordinary job. Yes, he's well-paid, but he's no different to any other man you'd pass in the street. As such, his life is incredibly ordinary too, and so proves the events of the film €“ the biggest set-piece involves him reading from a folder, closely followed by him taking cold medicine out of a glovebox. He's even got a handkerchief, for god's sake. He's just a regular guy who's been slapped with a bad case of Murphy's Law, and deals with it as any normal man would. He's got work problems, and fixes with them in an ordinary way involving no small amount of haranguing and grovelling. He's thrilled by the most mundane of things €“ there's joy etched all over his face when Donal finds a crew of road labourers just before they're about to clock off, and there's exasperation when he learns his colleague's been at the cider to help him cope with such a stressful situation. He rings the police to make sure the roads are all organised for the trucks, and even interrupts a council worker while he's at an Indian restaurant. His ambitions of 'stealing the sky' by setting up a building are notable professionally, but this isn't exactly the stuff of heroes and legends. But quixotically, it makes this film more enjoyable because it's all so bittersweet €“ Locke is a man ostensibly in denial, thinking that if he can fix this, he'll be able to fix the other screw-ups in his life. It's a realistic €“ albeit misplaced €“ goal being struggled toward by a realistic man, and it makes for a riveting watch.
