Logan: Every Major Character Ranked From Worst To Best
1. Charles Xavier
Though this is Hugh Jackman's film, it's also Sir Patrick Stewart's last stand as Professor Charles Xavier, and he is arguably an even more interesting character thanks to his devastating back-story and the changes to his character.
Stewart has always been one of the most towering performers in the X-Men franchise (and indeed in comic book movies in general), but his Xavier was always regal and powerful beneath the charm. It was never really noticeable, but he missed something because his relative lack of complexity.
But in adding vulnerability to Xavier, and turning his powers against him, Logan affords him the chance to really play with some substance. He still has poise, but he's a broken man, physically, mentally and emotionally, and it's mesmerising to see the layers peeled back from his performance, first the cantankerous victim, then the doting father and finally the remorseful killer.
And I challenge anyone not to be utterly devastated when he celebrates a perfect night with Logan and Laura, reveals he knows he accidentally killed the X-Men (how mortifying for a care-giver) and is then slain unceremoniously by X-24. It's enough to take your breath away.
