London Film Festival Days 9 & 10: Nocturnal Animals, Lo And Behold, Aquarius & More
1. The Ghoul
An audacious if imperfect effort from writer-director Gareth Tunley, The Ghoul is an intriguing psychological thriller about a man coming to terms with his own mental state and indeed, his own identity.
Lead actor Tom Meeten gives a bold performance as a man desperately trying to pull himself back from the void, and his journey only gets stranger the longer it goes on.
There's not much to shout home about here in terms of visuals or technical aspects, but there's a sure rough-hewn charm that works in its favour, as well as the fact that performances across the board are rock solid.
Rating: With its beguiling surreal component, Tunley shoots for a far more complex and ambitious film than it at first seems. While not always successful, The Ghoul is an enticing enough calling card all the same. 6/10
