Fans of the books were no doubt disappointed when Peter Jackson removed the warg attack on the Fellowship, just before they reach Moria. But, he more than made up for it by adding a sequence to the Two Towers.

The ambush on the refugees of Rohan was invented purely for the films. In the books, the newly invigorated Théoden rides out to join the Rohan forces, already doing battle with Saruman's army. It is only when they find a lone and wounded warrior that they discover Isengard has all but defeated Rohan. Théoden then makes decision to gather as many men as he can, and make for Helm's Deep.

But Jackson had other things in mind. He needed a way to show just how desperate the struggle of Rohan had become. At the same time he also wanted Aragorn to have a near the death experiences, in order to trigger his memory of Arwen, therefore reminding viewers of her significance.

It was a pretty clever way to tick several things off at once. And, lets not forget, we also got to see Legolas do more of his ridiculous acrobatics...
