8. Gandalf The Grey

Film: The Fellowship of the Ring How he died: In a battle against the Balrog As mentioned previously, the battle lasted for ten days but after this, he said that:

"Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time, and I wandered far on roads that I will not tell."

It was twenty days later where he returned as Gandalf the White. So don't of this as a death, but more of Gandalf levelling up. Still, no one wants to see their favourite wizard withering in pain in the freezing cold.
