Mad Max: Fury Road - 8 Things We Learned From The Trailer
6. The Action Will Be Amazing (And Practical)
One of the things that has helped the old Mad Max films age so well is their reliance on practical stunts. This was probably more born from necessity than any sort of creative decision, what with the first couple of movies being relatively low budget and computer effects not being what it is today, but seeing actual cars, bikes and stuntmen getting messed up amongst clouds of dust in the real Australian outback? Yeah, that looks a heck of a lot better than your typical Michael Bay CGI-fest, where you can't tell an arse from an elbow and everything appears fake as hell. There's something about the human eye that can just tell when something is real and when it's special effects. So either our eyes truly are deceiving us or George Miller has stuck with what he knows best for Fury Road. From the looks of the trailer a lot of the action looks like it's been done practically - that is, they've actually smashed up a load of cars, had people leaping off of them, and setting off big explosions across the Namibian desert they filmed it in. All of that probably isn't that practical to pull off, in the traditional sense of the word, but it's certainly worth the effort because it makes everything look even crazier and more impressive. You can see how they pull it off in a film with your usual big Hollywood budget, too. Miller managed to put some pretty cool car chases in the first Mad Max film, when he was working off money he'd raised himself, and each stunt had to be done perfectly in one shot. They couldn't afford another take, once the cars in question had already been wrecked. With a bigger budget to play with it looks like he's going all out, with action sequences taking place between entire fleets of futuristic automobiles slamming into each other, flipping over and exploding into flames. And you can tell he takes this stuff seriously, since nearly half the time spent filming the first Mad Max was entirely focussed on the car chases. More of this please, Hollywood.
