Mad Max: Fury Road - 8 Things We Learned From The Trailer
3. Charlize Theron Is The Hero
Perhaps the biggest thing we learned from the Mad Max: Fury Road trailer is just how big of a part Charlize Theron would be playing in the film. Now obviously you don't cast a huge, globally-recognisable superstar like Theron for just a cameo, but for the most part the Mad Max films have all been about...well, Mad Max. He's a loner, a solo character by necessity, all the better to have the climax of the film - when one individual triumphs against dozens of lunatics - all the more satisfying. George Miller is clearly eager to mix things up here, however, since it looks like Theron's Imperator Furiosa (man this movie has some silly names) is going to be playing as big a part as Tom Hardy's eponymous hero. In fact as soon as she was cast it was announced that she'd be playing a "major role" in the film. She certainly has a major role in this trailer, being the only character who gets any dialogue and actually spending a significant amount of time on screen - possibly even more so than Mad Max himself. Which makes sense, because from the looks of it she's going to be a total badass. For one thing there's that wonderfully DIY robotic arm she's sporting in the photo above, which includes a friggin' wrench as part of its mechanism. We like to think she went all 127 Hours on her appendage for some reason, then built herself a mechanical replacement. She's just that awesome. We've got plenty of evidence to back that up besides. There's the enormous truck she drives, War Rig, which we don't think is an ironic title. There's the fact that, despite her stated mission (from the official plot synopsis) being that she wants to "return to her hometown", she manages to take time out to try and rescue those wives of Immortus Joe. Which also suggests she only gets involved with Max by accident, what with him being Joe's captive too and all. And did we mention that her character's name is Imperator Furiosa? Also, not from the trailer, but scuttlebutt is that Mad Max 5 - to be released soon after 4 - has the subtitle of Furiosa. Is she being set up as the franchise's new hero, perchance?
