Mads Mikkelsen: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked
1. Rochefort - The Three Musketeers (2011)
Whoever it was who convinced Paul WS Andeson that he had just the right stuff to make a Three Musketeers film is the second biggest liar attached to this whole sorry affair. The biggest is whoever convinced Mads Mikkelsen that Anderson was the right man for the job.
The film suffers a major identity crisis, caught between golden age swash-buckling sentimentalism and Anderson's burning need to reinvent with a sort of steam-punk modernism that manifests in too many effects. Unfortunately, the director also failed singularly to get a single good performance out of his cast.
The result is a little like reading a book report by someone who read the Musketeers story on Wikipedia, and arguably the biggest crime is basically billing Mikkelsen as a third string villain, but making him look like a top notch pantomime sort with a fetching eye-patch and enormous hat. He should have been like a villainous Lord Flashheart, but instead he just sort of stands around tolerating Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz never living up to their higher billings.
