Sassy, sexy, confident professional women, right? Not according to Superman Returns. Taking one of comics most balanced female characters and stripping her of any sex appeal might be something worse than a mistake. Somehow doing it with an actress who has considerable charm and good looks anyway is just mystifying. When you have to portray a character that is supposed to enthrall the world's most impressive being, toning that character down makes for some unbelievable and joyless viewing. Maybe Amy Adams's job on Man of Steel is the easiest of them all: Do the exact opposite of everything Kate Bosworth did. With a love interest that demands the audience's attention, Man of Steel will go a long way towards getting it right.
