Man Of Steel Trailer: 10 Things We Learned

9. The "S" Stands For Something New

Man of Steel It was established in the previous Superman films that the "S" emblazoned on his chest was a Kryptonian symbol that actually meant "House of El" (referring, of course, to Superman's family name), but Zack Snyder has opted to change this, instead using its placement as a brief bout of comic relief that presumably takes place mid-film. Supes points out to Lois in an interrogation room - I'm assuming after he voluntarily hands himself over to the authorities - that it stands for "hope", which of course reflects the notion that he is the final hope of Krypton, sent away from the dying planet towards Earth. In cheeky fashion, Lois remarks that on Earth, it's an S, and it means...Superman, once you get all of that microphone feedback out of the way, anyway.
