5. Poetic Imagery
One thing the trailers incorporate extremely well is the technique of show-dont-tell. Images describe Supermans plight as well as any voice-over can: the rock, washed over by the ocean; the gull flying on the spot; the boat amidst the crashing waves. These images, combined with some classy dialogue and some pilfered Lord of the Rings original score of course, make a metaphor of Supermans unwavering physical and moral strength in the face of adversity, but also of the inherent fact that hes alone, the last of his kind. And each image has a second connotation depending on the accompanying voice-over. Of course these are just my interpretations based on what I know about Superman; Im certain others will have come to entirely different conclusions. Regardless, if this is the level of imagery were getting from the trailer, I can only hold out hope that the film delivers more of the same.
