The Theory

Here's a question for you: why did Loki want to subjugate Earth during the events of The Avengers, when his primary target has always been Asgard? The answer: his attack on Earth was a diversion, designed to get him back to Asgard after his exile.

And not only that, but his plot also included continued alliance with Thanos, who would benefit from him losing and being transported home with the Tesseract.

The Evidence

That sort of evil plotting suits Loki as the God Of Mischief, and his all-consuming desire for Asgard. Him losing to the Avengers was actually the best possible outcome for him. There's no way the Trickster would be out-tricked by Black Widow to reveal his plan accidentally, he's the one manipulating here to get back home.

And it's not like Loki has ever shown any inclination to take over Earth again since - even when he's sitting on Asgard's throne.

Plus, he helped Thanos get the Tesseract out of the protective hands of SHIELD/HYDRA and onto Asgard, where it would be easier for him to retrieve it, knowing Loki had a long-form plan to take over himself.
