With the all-powerful cosmic heroine Captain Marvel set to debut in her own '90s-set movie alongside Nick Fury after Infinity War, troubling questions have been raised.

Like why has the SHIELD director never referenced her existence if he encountered her decades ago? And where has she been all this time?

More than likely, Fury has kept mum because Marvel Studios had no idea they would get to make a Captain Marvel film until well into the cinematic universe construction, but what if there's a deeper, less corporate reason behind it?

Brie Larson's heroine is set to battle the Skrull during her solo outing, a shape-shifting alien race which invades Earth by swapping its heroes for evil carbon copies.

Samuel L Jackson might not be on board with this, but revealing Fury as a Skrull would not only plug a minor plothole, it would also pave the way for an adaptation of the fan-favourite Secret Invasion event on screen.

Think about it, Fury is the one who assembled the Avengers, allowing him to keep tabs on Earths Mightiest Heroes and move them across the metaphorical chess board like pawns while his Skrull comrades plot the checkmate.
