As we've already touched upon, we think Thor will die in Age of Ultron. But we think he'll be back as soon as Civil War. The likelihood is that the majority of the big hitters will be siding with Tony Stark in the Civil War. Stark's Iron Man is already a powerful member of the team, his friend Rhodey's War Machine will likely join him, as will his friend Bruce "Hulk" Banner, as will Vision with JARVIS as the A.I. within him, and we can see the Maximoff twins liking the idea of being paid to register as superheroes. Ragnarok, as a Stark creation, will also give the pro-registration side some Asgardian oomph and Captain America's side will be lacking in big guns as a result. Cue Odin finding out about the Civil War, thanks to Heimdall - and, specifically, finding out about Ragnarok - and resurrecting his son from Hel to join Captain America's plight. It will be a glorious return for the fallen warrior, as he fights on the side of Captain America and those who believe in freedom and somewhat evens the odds against Stark's powerful team.
