It's still pretty impressive that a film as transformative as Iron Man - and so tightly focused - could have inspired a sequel wildly messy and frustrating as Iron Man 2. Especially when it's from the same director. But despite having some good ideas - something it shares with The Dark World - such as Tony's battles with addiction and his downward spiral and Sam Rockwell's excellent Justin Hammer, it ends up feeling as lost as the original is confident and focused.

Robert Downey Jr and Rockwell are great but Mickey Rourke's Whiplash is not good at all (despite his assertion that the studio screwed him in the edit) and the action is silly without the right balance of inter-cast chemistry that works so well elsewhere in the MCU. And the fights are weirdly threatless and stakeless, even as there's an obvious attempt to make them grander in scale.

At least the soundtrack by ACDC is absolutely brilliant.
