2. Scott Thorson - Behind The Candelabra

Behind the Candelabra Matt Damon It goes without saying that had Behind the Candelabra been released theatrically in the US before its HBO TV premiere, it would certainly be nominated for numerous Academy Awards next year, but due to the Academy's archaic rules, Michael Douglas and Matt Damon may have to settle for Golden Globes and/or Emmys. While Douglas obviously takes the lion's share of the praise for his volcanic, effervescent performance as Liberace, the film wouldn't be much about anything without Damon's staggering supporting turn as Lee's live-in-lover Scott Thorson. Though Damon is noticeably about double the age of the real Thorson when our story begins, it's easy to forget this once the story gets going. Damon is fascinating to watch as the initially shy young man who soon enough becomes Liberace's assertive lover, before becoming embroiled in flagrant drug use and plastic surgery addiction.
