Matthew McConaughey: 5 Awesome Performances and 5 That Sucked

4. Mick Haller - The Lincoln Lawyer

mm5 And this is where Matty stops becoming the thinking man€™s Owen Wilson and becomes an engaging presence in his own right (not that he hadn€™t given good performances before). It€™s an above-average film, but that€™s down to McConaughey. His turn as criminal defence attorney Mickey Haller, operating out of a black Lincoln town car, who seems convinced of his career-defining client€™s innocence, is rather enigmatic and intriguing, and neatly harnesses his looks and charm to create a relatable guy who is not quite that down-to-earth. The fact he is not always totally successful makes Haller a flawed character, and altogether more appealing. He€™s seems quite a sleazeball, at least initially, but he is the driving force behind the film, and is without a doubt the best thing in it. I haven€™t read the Michael Connelly novels, so I can€™t say whether or not he€™s close to the character in the books, but with franchise potential, it€™s a role I€™d like to see McConaughey return to. Kind of like Jack Reacher if he failed the military medical. I think.
