Matthew McConaughey: 5 Awesome Performances and 5 That Sucked

2. Dallas - Magic Mike

vve If McConaughey doesn€™t win the best supporting actor gong for this, I€™ll be very surprised. It would be a travesty if he didn€™t. His turn as a strip-club-owner is a revelation and he brings the usual charm and wit, but we also see a greedy, manipulative piece of work trying to turn everyone to his way of thinking. He is selfish, and tetchy, and there are so many layers bubbling beneath that Olympian shell of a hunk. He is, quite literally, balls-out brave in this role, and relishes every moment he has one screen as a villain and as a mentor. His ambition to own an empire of strip clubs, starting with prime Tampa real estate, and his manipulation of Alex Pettyfer€™s Adam as he grooms him to take over from Channing Tatum€™s Mike, draws parallels with Wall Street. You know, if Gordon Gekko had got his wang out and Charlie Sheen had once done battle with Mickey Rouke. But I digress. McConaughey owns every single line (€œI see a lot of lawbreakers in here tonight!€), and pretty much every classic moment in the film has McConaughey involved somewhere. I challenge you to find a single review of the critically-adored film that doesn€™t say that he is the best thing about it. This is an iconic character in the making, and nobody but McConaughey could€™ve made it so. You feel this was the role he was born to play. And that's saying something.
