2. Dallas - Magic Mike
If McConaughey doesnt win the best supporting actor gong for this, Ill be very surprised. It would be a travesty if he didnt. His turn as a strip-club-owner is a revelation and he brings the usual charm and wit, but we also see a greedy, manipulative piece of work trying to turn everyone to his way of thinking. He is selfish, and tetchy, and there are so many layers bubbling beneath that Olympian shell of a hunk. He is, quite literally, balls-out brave in this role, and relishes every moment he has one screen as a villain and as a mentor. His ambition to own an empire of strip clubs, starting with prime Tampa real estate, and his manipulation of Alex Pettyfers Adam as he grooms him to take over from Channing Tatums Mike, draws parallels with
Wall Street. You know, if Gordon Gekko had got his wang out and Charlie Sheen had once done battle with Mickey Rouke. But I digress. McConaughey owns every single line (I see a lot of lawbreakers in here tonight!), and pretty much every classic moment in the film has McConaughey involved somewhere. I challenge you to find a single review of the critically-adored film that doesnt say that he is the best thing about it. This is an iconic character in the making, and nobody but McConaughey couldve made it so. You feel this was the role he was born to play. And that's saying something.
