Although only available for the most eagle-eyed of viewers, MJ’s collection of books actually tie-in with the plot of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

In the gym scene, Michelle is reading ‘Of Human Bondage’ – a saucy title for a fairly mundane book about an orphan boy who lives with his aunt. This isn’t our only literary reference though, as in the scene where she and Pete talk in the cafeteria we get a whole four; ‘The Adolescent’, ‘The Wings of the Dove’, ‘Woman in the Dunes’ and a mysterious book titled only ‘Democracy’.

While it’s been rumoured that these show MJ may know about Peter’s secret identity, there’s also another explanation. All four books have clear links to the idea of staying true to your beliefs, which has some clear ties to Peter’s struggle with his secret identity within the film.

It also reminds us that MJ is clearly incredibly smart, because very few people casually read Dostoevsky at lunch time, especially without the intention to brag about it.
