MCU: 10 Fascinating Facts Behind Ant-Man & The Wasp (2018)
3. It Had An Equal Merch Policy
With Ant-Man and the Wasp being of equal billing in the film’s
title, it makes sense that they also each gain an equal amount of fans. A
mixture of this, and ensuring a form of equality, appear to be the motivation
behind Peyton Reed – the film’s director – insisting that equal amounts of merchandise
be made for both Ant-Man and Wasp.
The (initial) lack of diversity within MCU heroes was a topic of contention among fans and critics alike for some time, so to see a director not only recognise this, but actively take steps to try and rectify it is pretty rewarding – and pretty telling as to how and why the MCU has significantly improved in terms of diversity since.
Given Reed’s active excitement at exploring the character of
the Wasp within the film, it’s clear this move is one that extends past what is
financially smart and moves into highlighting a sometimes ignored character.
