MCU: 10 Things You Learn Rewatching Iron Man 3
2. Don Cheadle Is Great As Rhodey
The MCU has done well to avoid recasting roles whenever possible, but even when they have, they've always been done fantastically. Mark Ruffalo succeeded a convincing Ed Norton for the part of Bruce Banner in 2012's Avengers, and when Terrence Howard fell out with Marvel after 2008's Iron Man, Don Cheadle immediately stepped in to fill his boots as Rhodey Rhodes for the sequel.
Whether it be in Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 or all the other MCU films since, Don Cheadle has been consistently great as the USAF Colonel. Granted, he could probably feature more, but when he does appear he's always enjoyable to watch, bringing a more comedic edge to the character than Howard managed to convey in that first Iron Man feature.
In the years since Rhodey has very much become Cheadle's character, and while roles are recast in superhero franchises all the time, it's honestly difficult to think of anyone else playing the part. Whether or not the actor 'owned' the role first in Iron Man 2 or 3 doesn't really matter - what does matter, however, is Cheadle's performance, and that it's one of the most enjoyable things about Shane Black's film.
